When I was a little boy I began to dream All of the little things were miracles to me The sound of a raindrop, the smell of autumn air The touch of lightness dancing everywhere Every day new wonders, chasing every chance No past or future, just the present tense WE COULD SEE EVERYTHING WE COULD DREAM EVERYTHING WE COULD BE ANYTHING Through my eyes I create the world I want to see The playful perspectives of my endless daydream WE SEE EVERYTHING WE DREAM EVERYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING WE CAN BE ANYTHING

Lovely Day 02:37
It’s gonna be a lovely day The whole world is out to play There’s so many special things for us to celebrate It’s just another lovely day Trees singing as they sway The sun is giving us its life with every golden ray IF YOU DON’T SEE THEN YOU’LL NEVER KNOW IF YOU DON’T DREAM THEN YOU’LL NEVER GROW YOU’VE GOT TO BREATHE IT IN AND BREATHE IT OUT AND LET IT BE, JUST LET IT GO… This could be your perfect day So get ready, don’t delay Don’t listen to a single word that other people say This is a lovely day You can make it that way Whatever it will be, it will be ok WE CAN SEE IT’S ALL BEAUTIFUL NO NEED TO DREAM CAUSE IT’S ALL ON SHOW JUST BREATHE IT IN AND BREATHE IT OUT JUST BE YOURSELF AND LET IT GO… It’s gonna be a lovely day It’s gonna be a lovely day It’s gonna be a lovely day It’s gonna be a lovely day It’s gonna be a lovely day It’s gonna be a lovely day It’s gonna be a lovely day It’s gonna be a lovely day

Young Lovers 03:35
Their love comes crashing out of the night Running fast, two blinding lights Burning brightly, so alive Don’t you know that this is the time for… YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS Their love comes shining into sight On a lost highway they must survive This other world they’ll leave behind Can’t you see that this is the time for… YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS Their love is beating full of life Two innocent hearts so entwined Exploding free of these Hollywood nights They know that this is the time for… YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS Their love comes crashing down tonight Running too fast, two fading lights Burning out but they lived so bright They know this could be the last night for… YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS YOUNG LOVERS

Mother 04:19
When I was small your blankets broke my fall In a bubble without harm, my world within your arms Mother – so warm and safe, focussed only on your face And when the cracks appeared you comforted my fear Mother – I grew my skin and the darkness sunk deep within MOTHER YOU HAVE SHOWN THAT THERE’S LOVE IN THESE BONES AND IT WILL ALWAYS FLOW MOTHER I HOPE YOU KNOW YOUR HEART IS OUR HOME IT’S THE PLACE TO WHICH WE’LL ALWAYS RETURN When you cried, only then I realised Mother – I caused you pain, I won’t do it again MOTHER YOU HAVE SHOWN THAT THERE’S LOVE IN THESE BONES AND IT WILL ALWAYS FLOW MOTHER I HOPE YOU KNOW YOUR HEART IS OUR HOME BUT NOW IT’S TIME FOR US TO GROW FOR US TO GROW, FOR US TO GROW, FOR US TO GROW WE WILL GROW WE WILL GROW WE WILL GROW WE WILL GROW Mother, mother, mother, mother…

You’re just a role playing, table waiting, self-negating fantasy Functional, mechanical, dancing for society Stage actor, game player, living in duplicity Persuading people what you are but you know what this pretence means You know what’s underneath BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE THIS IS YOUR LIFE Paradoxical duality, you’re deceiver and deceived Censoring realty behind this objectivity World disarming falsehood farming, just another property You know you’re responsible but you ignore the urgency Put yourself out of reach You know the truth you try to flee BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE THIS IS YOUR LIFE All men are free, free to choose, what is right, what you do Morality bound by rule is no morality at all This anguish we can’t escape, a burden, a heavy weight This freedom is yours, it’s yours to embrace Endless possibilities, live for authenticity, take responsibility for your own self-recovery Just stop, let it go, be more than you have been sold BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE BAD FAITH / GOOD FAITH - DECIDE THIS IS YOUR LIFE

The Last One 03:04
You wake up to the sound of screams Is it real or just a dream? Something’s wrong or so it seems Every channel says the same This is the end of days The clock is set so don’t be late AT THE END OF THE WORLD YOU’LL BE ALL ALONE THERE’S NOWHERE SAFE, NOT EVEN YOUR HOME YOU’VE GOT TO REALISE THAT YOU’RE THE LAST ONE So let’s head to the mall Come on everyone let’s go We can live there till we’re old It’s got everything we want Baseball bats and fashion stores But someone didn’t lock the doors – uh-oh AT THE END OF THE WORLD YOU’LL BE ALL ALONE THERE’S NO-ONE THERE WHEN YOU PICK UP THE PHONE YOU’VE GOT TO REALISE THAT YOU’RE THE LAST ONE NOW EVERYONE’S DEAD AND YOU’RE ALL ALONE NOTHING LEFT TO DO BUT FOR YOU TO GET STONED AND REGRET ALL THE THINGS THAT YOU WISH YOU’D DONE YOU THOUGHT THE APOCALYPSE WOULD BE MUCH MORE FUN IT’S THE END OF THE WORLD AND EVERYONE’S GONE EVERYBODY’S GONE, EVERYONE’S GONE, EVERYONE EVERYBODY’S GONE, EVERYONE’S GONE, EVERYONE EVERYBODY’S GONE, EVERYONE’S GONE, EVERYONE YOU’RE THE LAST ONE, YOU’RE THE LAST ONE… YOU’RE THE LAST ONE YOU’RE THE LAST ONE YOU’RE THE LAST ONE YOU’RE THE LAST ONE YOU’RE THE LAST ONE YOU’RE THE LAST ONE YOU’RE THE LAST ONE YOU’RE THE LAST ONE

In black and white, no shades of grey We look back on better days Through open fields and open doors We walk forward, hoping for more WITH ALL OF THESE CINEMATIC MEMORIES Our broken heart, idealised All those perfect moments, even when we cried We were the world, life was written for us Our teenage dreams, our young lust WITH ALL OF THESE CINEMATIC MEMORIES We're creeping forwards but we're still slipping back through time We're creeping forwards but we're still slipping back through time I see you racing through Tokyo streets Past motorcycles, where we will meet Under neon skies, through mirrored lights The emptiness reflected back through our lives WITH ALL OF THESE CINEMATIC MEMORIES CINEMATIC MEMORIES CINEMATIC MEMORIES CINEMATIC MEMORIES CINEMATIC MEMORIES In black and white, no shades of grey We look back on better days....

As the world dies tonight We look one last time At the failures left behind The footprints of our lives Now look to the skies As we say goodbye Will anyone even notice If we don’t survive? The time has come It’s time to run We must find a new home It’s time to go… To the sanctuary of stars To the sanctuary of stars We will shine our light We will shine our light To the stars To the stars We float into space The end of the human race Now we’ve been released There will be peace No countries, no race No divisions, no hate Dust to dust Is what we’ve become We must return Back to the birth To begin again To find a new way… To the sanctuary of stars To the sanctuary of stars We will shine our light We will shine our light We will shine our light We will shine our light To the stars To the stars To the stars To the stars

This Is It 03:31
Time, we all take too much time over nothing Then it’s gone, it’s lost and we’re forgotten We cling to a hope that things will get better Dreams aren’t for today or tomorrow, they’re for never YOU CAN RUN ALL YOU LIKE BUT THE TRUTH RUNS BY YOUR SIDE THIS IS IT THIS MOMENT THIS IS YOUR LIFE Bound to a future you’ve been sold But right here, right now - this is yours to own DON’T TRY TO HIDE FROM THE POSSIBILITIES INSIDE THIS IS IT THIS MOMENT THIS IS YOUR LIFE THIS IS IT THIS MOMENT THIS IS YOUR LIFE THIS IS IT THIS MOMENT THIS IS YOUR LIFE THIS IS IT THIS MOMENT THIS IS YOUR LIFE IS THIS IT? IS THIS IT? THIS IS IT THIS IS IT THIS IS IT THIS IS IT THIS IS IT THIS IS IT THIS IS IT THIS IS IT

about

‘The Last One’ is the second album from folk-rock singer-songwriter Gavin Chappell-Bates.

It will be released independently, on CD, vinyl and through digital platforms, on Friday 23rd March 2018. This follows on from Gavin’s successful debut album ‘We Are The Ones’ which was released on R*E*P*E*AT Records in 2016 and gained airplay from the likes of BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music.

The album began life with one single thought: “What would you do if you were the last person alive when the world as we know it ends?”

Gavin took this question and began to weave a musical story which became ‘The Last One’. It tells the tale of the cycle of life and what that means for a person, the human race, our planet and the wider universe.

Just like the cycle of life itself, the album shifts through a variety of themes, moods and sounds. It begins with the innocence of infancy and youth, as highlighted in first single ‘Lovely Day’ which explores a childlike wonder with the world in an acoustically driven, bouncing, folk-pop song.

The album then shifts into its darker and more ominous middle phase, just like those uncertain and questioning teenage years we all live through. This section includes the last single to be released – ‘Bad Faith / Good Faith’, an indie-dance-rock anthem inspired by philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre’s concept of ‘mauvaise foi’ (bad faith). It also features forthcoming single ‘Do What You Like’, a folk-rock stomper inspired by Gavin’s conversion to veganism which questions our relationship with animals and nature.

Before things get too serious, this section comes to a close with an outrageous tongue-in-cheek rock ’n’ roller – ‘The Last One’ – which assumes that the end of the human race will be the result of a zombie apocalypse!

The album comes to a close with its final section which resolves itself in an understanding and acceptance of ourselves and our place in the universe. The gentle and beautiful string-laden ‘The Sanctuary of Stars’ looks at our return home, to the stars, as stardust. The album then finishes with the life-affirming guitar rock of ‘This Is It’ which, after all the reflection of the album, confirms that all we can do is live our lives now, in this moment.

The album came to life thanks to a large number of fans who collectively crowd-funded its production and release. It was recorded by Bugs at Half-ton Studios (Lonely The Brave) and features an array of talented musicians including Booga (Ezio), Paul Richards (Fred’s House) and Neil Bruce (Bouquet of Dead Crows). It also features original art by Gavin’s wife, Ali Chappell-Bates.
