’Lovely Day’ is a jaunty folk-pop song from Cambridge musician Gavin Chappell-Bates. It is the first single to be taken from his forthcoming second album ‘The Last One’, which was successfully crowd funded early in 2017.
‘The Last One’ tells the story of the cycle life – the life of humanity, of planet earth and of the entire universe. It was created from the thought: “what would you do if you were the last human alive when the world ends?”
‘Lovely Day’ features early in the album and in the story, at a time of innocence, joy and wonder, which is reflected in the music and the lyrics.
The accompanying music video takes up the message of the song, featuring Gavin, as a ‘pied-piper’ / ‘Dorothy’ character, happily bounding through the woods, meeting and helping a collection of wonderful woodland creatures on his way. This idea came from Gavin’s wife, Alison, who said that ‘Lovely Day’ sounded like it was being played by a marching band of animals. Alison followed this through into the artwork she drew for the single cover.
As ever with Gavin’s music, there is a raft of emotions and styles throughout ‘The Last One’, with ‘Lovely Day’ at one end of the colourful spectrum. It is a short and simple, stripped back folk song with the acoustic guitar at its heart.
Having lived with mental health issues for much of his life, and tired of so much negativity portrayed in the media throughout the world, Gavin wanted to write a song which celebrates all the good things about life and the wonderful world in which we inhabit.
lyrics
It’s gonna be a lovely day
The whole world is out to play
There’s so many special things for us to celebrate
It’s just another lovely day
Trees singing as they sway
The sun is giving us its life with every golden ray
IF YOU DON’T SEE THEN YOU’LL NEVER KNOW
IF YOU DON’T DREAM THEN YOU’LL NEVER GROW
YOU’VE GOT TO BREATHE IT IN AND BREATHE IT OUT
AND LET IT BE, JUST LET IT GO…
This could be your perfect day
So get ready, don’t delay
Don’t listen to a single word that other people say
This is a lovely day
You can make it that way
Whatever it will be, it will be ok
WE CAN SEE IT’S ALL BEAUTIFUL
NO NEED TO DREAM CAUSE IT’S ALL ON SHOW
JUST BREATHE IT IN AND BREATHE IT OUT
JUST BE AND LET IT GO…
It’s gonna be a lovely day
It’s gonna be a lovely day
It’s gonna be a lovely day
It’s gonna be a lovely day
It’s gonna be a lovely day
It’s gonna be a lovely day
It’s gonna be a lovely day
It’s gonna be a lovely day
